From Policy to Action: How GDGI is Driving Inclusive Climate Strategies
A Pivotal Moment in Disability-Inclusive Climate Action
Wednesday, 28th February 2025, marked a pivotal moment for Global Disability Green Initiative (GDGI) as we proudly participated in the Council for Renewable Energy Nigeria's (CREN) Annual General Meeting, held at the prestigious Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja. This groundbreaking collaboration not only strengthened our partnership with CREN but also paved the way for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the renewable energy sector.
The event brought together leading stakeholders and experts, fostering meaningful discussions and knowledge sharing. We're thrilled to be part of this movement and to advocate for the integration of accessibility into sustainable development efforts.
GDGI’s Mission and Approach
GDGI is committed to integrating disability inclusion into climate action, advocating for policies that prioritize accessibility, equity, and resilience. By collaborating with governments, businesses, and advocacy groups, GDGI works to implement sustainable solutions that address the unique challenges faced by disabled individuals in the face of climate change.
Key Areas of Impact
1. Inclusive Climate Policies
One of GDGI’s major initiatives is influencing climate policies to recognize the needs of disabled communities. Through research, policy recommendations, and direct engagement with decision-makers, GDGI ensures that:
- Climate adaptation and disaster preparedness plans are accessible.
- Funding mechanisms support sustainable housing and infrastructure for disabled individuals.
- Environmental policies incorporate accessibility as a core principle.
2. Green Infrastructure and Accessibility
GDGI advocates for the development of sustainable cities that cater to all abilities. This includes:
- Designing eco-friendly public transportation that accommodates wheelchairs and other mobility aids.
- Implementing green building codes that consider accessibility alongside energy efficiency.
- Promoting inclusive urban planning to ensure that parks, walkways, and public spaces are accessible to disabled individuals.
3. Empowering Disabled Individuals in Green Jobs
Sustainability-driven industries are growing rapidly, but employment opportunities must be inclusive. GDGI supports:
- Vocational training programs that equip disabled individuals with skills for green jobs.
- Incentives for businesses to hire people with disabilities in sustainability-related roles.
- Entrepreneurship programs that encourage disabled individuals to launch eco-friendly businesses.
4. Sustainable Assistive Technologies
Technology plays a crucial role in both accessibility and sustainability. GDGI collaborates with innovators to develop assistive devices that are:
- Made from recyclable or biodegradable materials.
- Powered by renewable energy sources such as solar or kinetic energy.
- Designed for energy efficiency to reduce carbon footprints.
5. Climate Resilience and Emergency Preparedness
Natural disasters disproportionately impact disabled individuals, particularly when emergency response plans fail to accommodate their needs. GDGI is pushing for:
- Climate adaptation strategies that include disabled voices in planning and execution.
- Evacuation plans with accessible transportation and communication systems.
- Increased funding for climate-resilient housing for people with disabilities.
Strengthening Global Collaboration
On March 4, 2025, Mrs. Angelina Ugben, President of The Global Disability Green Initiative (GDGI), along with her team, had the honor of visiting the UN House, located at UN House, Diplomatic Drive, CBD, Abuja. She was warmly welcomed by Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian, Mr. Mohammed Malic Fall, and his team.
This meaningful engagement reaffirmed her commitment to advancing disability rights and environmental sustainability. She is excited to explore potential collaborations with the United Nations and foster stronger ties.
She appreciates the warm reception and looks forward to future opportunities for joint action. Her visit highlights the importance of solidarity and cooperation in driving positive change for persons with disabilities and promoting a more inclusive, sustainable world.
The Road Ahead
GDGI’s work is a testament to the power of inclusive climate action. As climate change intensifies, the need for equitable and accessible sustainability solutions will only grow. Through continued advocacy, collaboration, and innovation, GDGI is turning policy into action—ensuring that environmental justice includes everyone.
By prioritizing inclusivity, GDGI is shaping a future where climate resilience is a right, not a privilege. The journey toward a sustainable world must be one that all individuals, regardless of ability, can actively participate in and benefit from.
